Our Answer to the Russians

Here's Australia's answer to the Russian women's dominance of the Olympic shot put - Melbourne schoolgirl Margaret Woodlock!

Margaret isn't even a member of an athletic club, has never competed in a first-class competition.

BUT -
She's already smashed the Australian residential shot put record, and every week is bettering the winning distance of the last Victorian and national championships!

Margaret, who has golden red hair, blue-grey eyes and a smattering of freckles on her smiling face, is doing her second year matriculation at St. Catherine's Girls' School, Toorak.

"I started off with the javelin," Margaret told me yesterday, "and it's still my favourite event. But Franz Stampfl asked me to put the shot one day, now I'm intrigued with it."

And Franz is intrigued with Margaret's ability to heave the 8lb. shot around.

"She has the physique, the has the punch, she's our answer to the Russian women's dominance in the shot," enthused Franz, at the University yesterday, where he was training his Olympic group.
