Joan Bosch of Coburg and Ivor Turner of North Coburg show their fencing skills at the Making the Most of Life event.

A parade of older former Olympians was a highlight of this years Making the Most of Life celebration of the annual United Nations International Day of Older Persons.

Older people flocked to the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Carlton to take part in Making the Most of Life activities.

The parade included Marg McLean, organiser for the fifth year of the event for the Council On the Ageing, Victoria.

Marg represented Australia as a shot-putter in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

The Olympic theme was continued in some of the Making the Most of Life activities, including fencing, archery and rowing.

Seniors also played indoor golf and bowls, quoits and badminton.

The more intrepid tried rock climbing and abseiling.

More gentle activities included handcrafts and gardening as well as games of canasta, chess, mah jong and Scrabble on a giant board.

Opening Making the Most of Life Minister for Aged Care Bronwyn Pike said the event provided plenty of incentive and ideas to encourage people to grow older with a positive attitude and a healthy constitution.
