Plenty has been happening with the 2006 Season of Chasing Pegasus (a play in ten chords) - so much, in fact, that we've been unable to run any acting workshops, due to lack of time! But that is about to be rectified with new classes announced for November - go to Classes to find out more.

The play has been receiving some great reviews from it's Melbourne season, including:

"... if you're in the mood for some dramatic theatre with interesting characters, inspiring stories and a feel-good, uplifting message, Chasing Pegasus provides an ultimately engaging hour of theatre." - 3RRR

"... confronting, thought provoking and engaging ... an experience that shouldn't be missed." - TheatreAlive.com.au

"Well-written ... inspirational ... Chasing Pegasus deftly holds up a mirror to the audience, reflecting back our foibles and frailties without, thankfully, falling into cliche or over-sentimentality." - Theatre Talk

We're now gearing up for our Mornington Peninsula season at Mt Martha House (the same venue in which we run our classes), beginning on Wednesday, October 18 and running to Sunday, October 22, 2006.

Previous Acting Up students, Kathleen Ronchi, Sarah Penn and Peter Flaherty are also in the cast, so if you want to hear about the Acting Up process first-hand, come along, see the show and have a chat to the cast afterwards!

Other cast include Jennifer Hansen, Bridget Neval, Michael Clayton, Tanya McCall, Hannah Fox, Charity Shaw and singer/songwriter, Ross Ryan.

A housewife, two teenagers, a school teacher, an ex-singer, an author, a deaf girl, an accountant, a book shop owner and a shop assistant. What do these people have in common? They are all members of the Serendipity Book Club and they are all about to embark on an unexpected journey ...

In a world where strife and terror abounds, where we are cajoled to fear, distrust, fight and destroy that which we don't understand, Chasing Pegasus (a play in ten chords) is a timely celebration of what makes us different, and through that discovery, a recognition of what makes us ultimately the same. Essentially, it is a story about finding the extraordinary in ourselves and our fellow man.

"Well-written and even, dare I say, inspirational, Chasing Pegasus deftly holds up a mirror to the audience, reflecting back our foibles and frailties without, thankfully, falling into cliché or over-sentimentality." - TheatreTalk

4 July 2006

It's been a hectic few months at Acting Up ... two lots of weekly classes have taken place (the second class are halfway through their sessions), with some great students attending. We've also had the So, You Want To Be In A Soap? Workshop with Marisa Warrington, which was a great day, and another lot of The Basics of Acting, and another The Business of Auditioning, this time with Casting Director Dina Mann. See photos below:

Francesca Sciacca Pip LeBlond Lola Howard
Michelle Drinnan John Doran William Moore
Peter Flaherty

Also, we just got the fantastic news that Acting Up Student Peter Flaherty (pictured above), just finished filming a guest lead role on "All Saints", and has signed a contract as a recurring Guest Lead for the next twelve months. We wish him every success with the part! Peter worked with Acting Up in 2003 during our weekly classes and returned to do The Business of Auditioning Workshop with Dina Mann, to keep his auditioning skills sharp - proving that you should never stop learning, no matter how much success you achieve!

Acting Up student, Emily Andrews, who undertook private classes earlier this year, also has some great news, landing a lead role in an independent UK feature film (title yet to be announced), due to start filming in August this year. Emily relocated to London in May to try her hand at a career in the UK and has proven that determination, flexibility and talent are necessary traits to help you succeed in this industry. We wish her all the best with the role and know she'll do a fantastic job.

Acting Up will be slowing up over the next few months, as our tutor, Sally McLean, is in the midst of producing and directing her play "Chasing Pegasus (a play in ten chords)" for the upcoming 2006 Melbourne Fringe Festival, and is currently in the throes of preparing for a couple of intense days of auditioning actresses for the various roles yet to be cast in late July. For more information about the play and auditions, visit www.chasingpegasus.com. We will be scheduling a few workshops over the July - October period, but less frequently than we have been, due to Sally's availability being less than usual with the play.

We are also in the midst of a revamp of our workshops, taking on board student feedback from the past few months, so keep an eye out for those exciting changes as well.

Our next newsletter is due out in the next couple of days, so if you'd like to subscribe to keep up with what we're doing, you can do so HERE.

Oh, and for our American readers (of which there are a couple) Happy Independence Day!

8 May 2006

Things continue along at Acting Up, with new classes and facinating workshops. We've just completed the third Basics of Acting workshop, and are now gearing up for So, You Want To Be In A TV Soap? with Guest Tutor, Marisa Warrington, taking place on Saturday, May 13. For full details, go to our Classes page.

We are also delighted to announce that the Acting Up Weekly Classes are returning to Mt Martha House! Weekly Classes will take place on Thursday nights for six (6) weeks and commence on Thursday, May 18, 2006. The classes will include the following modules:

14 April 2006

My, how time flies! Things have been so busy within the world of Acting Up that we haven't even had time to update the news page. So this entry may be a relatively long one ...

We've run three workshops over the past couple of months - squeezed in between Sally's own work as an actor/director (and private tutor) and our various guest tutors' schedules.

Our two Basics of Acting workshops went very well, one run over one day (in February), the other run over two nights (in March) with all students doing great work and making some great leaps in their understanding of the craft.

Julie McMahon & Mark Pershin in The Basics of Acting workshop in March, 2006

Our Business of Auditioning workshop with Casting Director, Jo Rippon had a full class and all students enjoyed a crazy day of mad preparation in the morning and then "auditioning" for Jo in the afternoon. Jo was really impressed with the amount of work achieved in such a short time and the students all benefitted from working closely with her during the audition process. Jo's feedback was universally considered really useful and helpful and all students had a great day.

We now move on to the next round of workshops - Mastering the Monologue, The Business of Auditioning II, and So, You Want To Be In A Soap? with Marisa Warrington. Details will be available on the site from late April.

3 December 2005

Lots has been happening in the Acting Up camp over the past couple of months. If you want to catch up with what's been going on, check out the Acting Up Newsletter Archives, browse through our Message Board and have a look at our classes for early 2006! Great line up of tutors, including Casting Directors, Jo Rippon and Dina Mann, Television Director, Richard Sarell and Theatre and TV actress, Marisa Warington. To find out more, go to our "Classes" page, here.

29 October 2005

Acting Up has gone through some major changes and is now ready to re-launch with some new workshops in both Acting and related disciplines. As of November 3rd, Incognita Enterprises will take the reigns of the Acting Up series of classes and to celebrate this new phase in the life of Acting Up, we proudly present a new range of workshops, with a new line up of tutors - details to be announced this week. To find out more, go to our "Classes" page, here.

9 June 2005

After a six month break, Sally is back with two Masterclasses - Audition Technique (9&10 July) & Acting Technique (Characterisation) (20 & 21 August) - which are now open for bookings. To find out more, go to our "Classes" page, here.

18 January 2004

Acting Up is delighted to announce it's first Seminar - The Business Of Acting - to be held in Melbourne in September 2005. This intensive industry seminar will be held over two days, and consist of talks from Casting Directors, Producers and Theatrical Agents about audition process, networking, gaining agent representation, how to present yourself at auditions and other related subjects, as well as workshops with Directors and Actors on Audition Technique and Acting for the Camera. If you would like to register your interest in attending this seminar, please use our contact form here.

More details will be posted on the site as they come to hand.

15 December 2004

Sally has decided to announce that due to her own acting commitments, the Acting Up series of regular Master Classes will now cease until further notice. She would like to thank all the students who have worked with her over the past three years and wishes them well with their acting careers.

3 November 2004

Enrolments are now closed for the Stanislavski Workshop - with a full class booked in. This is the last class in the Acting Up series of masterclasses for 2004.

14 October 2004

The Acting for Camera Workshop was a great success with a full class and some great talent. Guest Tutor, Mike Bishop, entertained and informed students about the world of television and film, with all students truly enjoying his session and gaining a great insight into this aspect of the industry. Enrolments are now being taken for the Stanislavski Workshop to be held in November.

27 September 2004

Due to the tutors' work commitments, the Acting For Camera workshop, previously advertised as taking place on Saturday, October 16th will now be taking place on Saturday, October 23rd.  An email will be sent out to all students who have enrolled, giving them the option to cancel their booking, if the 23rd is not suitable.  Acting Up apologises for this inconvenience.

14 September 2004

Due to one of Salmac's feature film projects going fully into overdrive in pre-production, the Acting Up series of Masterclasses will probably not be continuing beyond November this year, as Sally is heavily involved in the film as Producer.  That said, all things change, especially in the film industry, but in answer to all the enquires about next year's classes - this is why we can't give you a clear idea on what will be happening.  Stay tuned for updates via this page, or visit Salmac Productions' website for more information.

10 September 2004

The latest Acting Up Master Class (in Acting Technique) has a full quota of students and will be going ahead on Saturday, September 18 & Sunday, September 19.  Thanks to all those students who've applied - some regulars and some new ones - we look forward to seeing you all on the weekend!

The next workshop in October - Acting For The Camera - already taking bookings, so get in now if you want to grab a place!  You can download the enrolment form from this site HERE (in Adobe Acrobat format).

25 August 2004

Some site news. We've been getting a lot of student feedback, and so have decided on two things:

1) We've added some student feedback on the introduction page, so you can see what others have said who've already done the courses. You'll find that here, if you haven't seen it already.

2) We're now offering an extra service to students - putting your CV and headshot online on our new web site - Under the Spotlight. This site is only for Acting Up students and costs $35 a year to have two photos and your CV on the web. The fee also includes monthly updates to your CV (as required) and updating your photo when you get new photos done (which we all know should be once every six months, right?).

We would include this cost automatically in the course fees, but it would mean increasing our course fees and not every student may feel they're ready to promote themselves to the world just yet. So if a student doesn't want this service, then that would be rather unfair. Therefore it's entirely optional for students, if they're interested.

If you want to know more about Under the Spotlight, then click here.

23 August 2004

The Audition Technique Masterclass has now come and gone, with some new students coming along whom it was a pleasure to meet. Sadly, not all six students who booked could be there, but those that did attend worked hard and all presented really strong auditions to the panel on the Sunday. All in all, a good weekend was had by everyone.

The next Masterclass (Acting Technique/Characterisation) is now taking bookings. It will take place on Saturday September 17 and Sunday September 18, again at Mt Martha House. Cost of the course is $100 for the weekend, with a deposit of $50 required at time of booking. If you're interested in grabbing a place, you can find out all about it in our Classes section.

11 August 2004

"P.S. I Love You" went off without a hitch and played to a nicely full house on Opening Night. The cast and crew all did brilliantly, with great feedback being received from the general public and critics alike. A review of the show should be appearing in the October 2004 edition of Stage Whispers, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that they liked it!

15 July 2004

A feature article appeared today in the Weekender, with a photo of some of the cast of "PS I Love You" on the front cover. We'd like to thank Kristy Spena for her lovely interview with Sally as well as getting us the inside photo spread (and the front cover, of course!). You can read the article in the Press section.

7 July 2004

Regular ABC Radio listeners may have heard Writer/Director, Sally McLean being interviewed on ABC Radio 774 by Evenings presenter, Derek Guille at 7.40pm tonight. They discussed the play "P.S. I Love You" and heard from one of the girls who was a member of the Auxiliary Women's Land Army, which was fascinating. You can visit the ABC website for more information - http://www.abc.net.au/melbourne/stories/s1107649.htm.

23 June 2004

Happy New Year! After a sojourn to Sydney, Acting Up at the House tutor, Sally McLean, has returned to Melbourne with the announcement that Chasing Pegasus (A Play in Ten Chords) will have a return performance on Saturday, January 31, 2004. For full details, including ticket booking information, visit the official site here.

20 December 2003

"Chasing Pegasus" (A Play in Ten Chords) was a wonderful success, playing to a full house and receiving strong and positive feedback from the audience. There is talk of restaging the show, due to the amount of people who want to see it again! You can visit the official website here.

14 December 2003

Our short film, fixNATION, completed filming yesterday (10 set ups in one day - insane schedule!) and managed to finish 2 hours ahead of schedule! This was wholly due to the wonderful crew (all 19 of them) and the very professional cast (all 10 students of Acting Up at the House). And, amazingly, a good and fun day was had by all. A big thank you to Mt Martha House Committee of Management for their support and to all the cast and crew for their fantastic work. You can visit the official site for the film here.

18 November 2003

The end of term production has finally been announced. Chasing Pegasus (A Play in Ten Chords), written and directed by Sally McLean will be performed for one night only on Friday, 19th December, 2003 at Mt Martha House, Crn. The Esplanade & Dominion Rd, Mt Martha VIC. For tickets, call 0410 798 514 or just turn up on the night. You can find out more about the play in our "Productions" section here.

In related news, we are thrilled to have the hit 1970's song "I Am Pegasus" by Ross Ryan in the play. Ross has very graciously allowed us to use the song, and we are most grateful. You can visit Ross online at http://www.rossryan.com.au/

22 October 2003

Due to student demand, Acting Up is announcing a one-day workshop in Audition Technique to be held on Saturday November 29, 2003 from 10am to 4pm at Mt Martha House, Mt Martha, Victoria. The cost of the workshop will be $55 per student (incl. GST), and is intended for students aged 15 years old and up. For further information, or to book a place, call 0410 798 514 or email us. Places are limited, so please get in early!

20 October 2003

Due to an overwhelming response from students, Acting Up will be running an additional class on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 - 10.00pm for eight weeks. There are only 3 places left for the Tuesday class, so book now!

Tuesday students will be asked to attend the Wednesday evening talk by Neighbours actor, Alan Fletcher, along with the Wednesday students. The end of term showcase will consist of two short plays - one presented by the Tuesday students and the other by the Wednesday students. Also, all students from Term 4 will be appearing in a short film - we are still deciding if we can write one for 16 characters (a rather big ask), or if we will be producing 2 short films (the more likely option). Stay tuned for more information as it comes to hand!

13 October 2003

Acting Up is delighted to announce that our Guest Tutor for Term 4 will be Alan Fletcher ("Dr. Karl Kennedy" from "Neighbours"). To read more about Alan and what he will be talking about during his session with the students, please check out our Guest Tutor section here.

24 September 2003

Term 3 has built further on the students' work in improvisation, Stanislavski, voice and characterisation, with great results all 'round. We lost one student mid-term, due to her getting a role in her second theatre production for the year - well done Alesha! Great work for an actor who hadn't ever stepped near a stage before beginning the course in Term 1 - we're really proud of you and thrilled that you're finding such success already!

Term 4 will be spent working towards the end of year showcase, to be presented to an invited audience in December, which will include casting agents and other industry members, as well as friends and family. Also, in Term 4, students will be playing roles in a short film, written specifically for the class as an exercise in working on film. The film will receive a seperate launch in early 2004. These elements of the course have been included to give students the chance to perform both on stage and on screen, using the techniques they have learned over the term and/or year.

If you are interested in enrolling in Term 4, you can obtain an enrolment form from Mt Martha House Community Contact, Crn Dominion Road & The Esplanade, Mt Martha, Victoria, or by phoning 03 5974 2092.

10 July 2003

"Acting Up at the House" has finished another successful term! Students further explored working on camera and characterisation, as well as beginning the basics in voice and further polishing their improvisation skills. Feedback has been very positive and all students who successfully completed Term 2 intend to return to Term 3 of the course.

Sally would love to claim credit for the work students have been doing outside the course to further their ambitions to be performers, but she knows that it is solely down to their own determination, initiative and talent that they are achieving what they have. Three students have secured agent representation, two are appearing in lead roles in local theatre productions, one is currently auditioning for student films and two more are now auditioning for places at the Victorian College of the Arts. We wish all of them the greatest success and thank them for their commitment and dedication during the course.

Term 3 enrolments will take place week commencing Monday, July 14th, 2003, and you can obtain an enrolment form from Mt Martha House Community Contact, Crn Dominion Road & The Esplanade, Mt Martha, Victoria, or by phoning 03 5974 2092.
