Acting Up Newsletter - July 2006 Welcome to the Acting Up Newsletter for July 2006.
Report on Classes for June/July 2006 Weekly Classes (Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons) We have had two lots of weekly classes over the past seven weeks - one on a Thursday night and the current class on a Sunday afternoon. I have been really pleased with the commitment of the students in these classes, and they have been making some really interesting discoveries through the scene and character work, that have been a delight to watch. The most important elements of the work - focus and listening - have provided some fascinating improvisations and character studies, with students embracing the homework and set tasks, continuing to build on their skills each week. It is a pleasure to work with such talented and dedicated actors, who are also really lovely people, who show not only a great respect for the work, but also for each other. The Business of Auditioning with Dina Mann (Sat, July 1, 2006) The recent Business of Auditioning workshop with Casting Director Dina Mann again attracted a full class of actors, and, going by feedback, was a day enjoyed by all. All the students worked really hard and produced some great results. I am still waiting to hear formal feedback from Dina, but I can say that her initial reaction after running the audition sessions in the afternoon was that there was a lot of talent in the group - so well done to everyone. It was an intense day with a lot of information to pass on, in addition to working on the scenes in preparation for Dina's audition session in the afternoon. While I have relied on the students learning their lines and being open to direction and change in a short space of time with both me and the Casting Directors we work with for these workshops, I understand that this can be a big challenge to some actors and so I have taken on the student feedback from this and the Jo Rippon workshop, in regards to allowing more time to focus on the scene work preparation. As a result, we are restructuring future Audition Workshops to run over three half days, so we can get through everything and have the students fully prepared for the final audition session with a Casting Director. "Sensational. Great time usage. Dina was amazing. Well done Sal, and thank you. Most impressed. The "Audition" book will be my new bible." - Peter Flaherty, The Business of Auditioning Workshop, July 2006 You can read student feedback from the day here: http://www.salmac.com/masterclasses/feedback/ Acting Business book by Sally McLean to be published Included in the price for the Business of Auditioning workshop is the booklet "The Business of Auditioning" which gives tips for audition technique, advice on how to prepare for auditions, selecting pieces for audition as well as addressing the business side of auditions, such as lists of Melbourne casting directors, theatrical agents, recommended reading, etc (48 pages in all). This booklet is part of a larger book, which is due to be published later this year, which covers the ins and outs of the business side of the industry for actors. I have been working on this book for nearly two years and the work continues, so if there is anything you feel you would particularly like to know, please email me with suggestions for content as it is, after all, being written for actors such as yourselves! The audition booklet provided to the class as part of the workshop has received a great response from the students, and I'm glad to know that it is proving to be so helpful. Acting Up Students Making Their Mark We just got the fantastic news that Acting Up Student Peter Flaherty, just finished filming a guest lead role on "All Saints", and has signed a contract as a potential recurring Guest Lead for the next twelve months. We wish him every success with the part! Peter worked with Acting Up in 2003 during our weekly classes and returned to do The Business of Auditioning Workshop with Dina Mann, to keep his auditioning skills sharp - proving that you should never stop learning, no matter how much success you achieve! Also, Acting Up student Emily Andrews, who undertook private classes earlier this year, also has some great news, landing a lead role in an independent UK feature film (title yet to be announced), due to start filming in August this year. Emily relocated to London in May to try her hand at a career in the UK and has proven that determination, commitment and flexibility as well as talent are all necessary traits to help you succeed in this industry. We wish her all the best with the role and know she'll do a fantastic job. Are you a previous Acting Up student who's enjoying your own successes? Then let us know so we can share it with the world! Audition submissions continue to come in for the upcoming Incognita Enterprises' production of "Chasing Pegasus", to be staged as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival in October this year (with an additional season on the Mornington Peninsula in late October). Due to the overwhelming amount of submissions from actresses for auditions, we are bringing forward our closing date for audition submissions to Friday, July 7, 2006. If you are interested in auditioning and have not yet submitted, please submit your CV and headshot (totaling no more than 100kb - kilobytes - in size) to casting@chasingpegasus.com before this new date. For full audition information, including character briefs please visit: http://www.chasingpegasus.com/auditions/ We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the actresses who have already applied. The level of experience and talent is very high and we are delighted with the amount of interest the project has generated so far. And that's it for this edition!
Until next time, keep dreaming, keep taking action on your dreams
and I look forward to seeing you at one of our workshops (or
at a performance of "Chasing Pegasus"!) during the
coming months. A celebration of what makes
