ACTING UP UPDATE - MAY 2006

Welcome to the Acting Up Drama Workshops Update for May 2006

Hi All,

Due to a change in my personal schedule, which has freed me up until the end of June, Acting Up is proud to announce the return of the
Acting Up Weekly Classes. (We're doing this immediately, as we're not sure when the next opportunity will be).

We are now taking bookings for the first round of 2006 weekly classes, beginning Thursday, May 18.

Experience Level of Students Required:
Beginner (Emerging) to Intermediate
(including those with theatre experience, but limited screen credits)

The 6 week course will consist of the following modules:

Stage vs. Screen Technique
Camera work requires a different set of skills to stage acting. The basics remain the same, but the techniques for performance are substantially different. This module has been created to give actors the chance to hone and practice their camera technique in a safe and supportive environment.

Characterisation
Playing a character is not just about turning up to a film set, stage or television studio, delivering some lines and then going home. This module will explore simple techniques that will help you to delve into building a believable character, in addition to using your own experience and creativity, which will give any character you play the sense of realism required of modern actors in all mediums.

Working With Text
One of the most important elements of any professional actor's work ethic, which goes on long before they set foot anywhere near a camera or audience is: research, preparation and a bit more research. This aspect of the class is designed to help you look deeper into the character, script setting and writer's intention, beyond the lines on the page, using techniques that can be applied to any role in any script, to make your performance as real as you are. Also includes improvisation technique.

Stanislavski System
What is the Stanislavski Technique? Is it the "Method Acting" we hear so much about? Well, it's most certainly where that system came from. This class will explore the basic premise of Stanislavski's techniques for "real" or "naturalistic" acting, which are applicable to any part in any production, and have been used by actors, famous and infamous, world-wide for the last fifty years.

Monologue work
Actors usually either love or hate monologues. I have met very few who are ambivalent about them. Whether you adore them or live in fear of encountering them, there is definitely a technique to playing them successfully. This module deals with how to play a monologue believably and yet, still engage an audience. Also includes line-learning techniques.

Voice Work
The basis to every solid performance is breathing and voice work. This element of the classes covers the basics in voice training, with exercises carried out each week to improve and help embody good voice technique for stage and screen.
