Report on "The Basics of Acting" Workshop - 12 November, 2005
After a very busy week on my part, Saturday arrived much faster than I thought possible, bringing with it the first of the new series of Acting Up Workshops - "The Basics of Acting". With only four students booked in, I looked forward to a day of exploration of the acting craft with a small group of students, which would give us the opportunity to work closely and intensely on as many aspects as possible in the time allowed.
Little did I realise at 8am that morning just how intensely we would get to work!
By 10am, I had discovered that two of the four students couldn't attend the workshop, which left Emma Rushton and Georgie Rist as the sole focus of my attention for the day.
And what a wonderful day it was. I always get a huge kick out of working with those who have the talent, and are eager for the knowledge - and Georgie and Emma were no exception. Both girls worked so very hard during the day, maintaining their concentration and focus throughout, both willingly throwing themselves into every situation, whether it be working with the basic theories of Stanislavski with notes and the whiteboard, or speaking in gibberish in improvisations to clarify emotion and objectives in the scenework!
It was a real pleasure to see the incredible growth and clarity of their character work and acting technique from both the girls in such a short time. Both girls delivered natural and realistic performances in their scene work for the tape by the end of the day, and literally blew me away with how much they had taken in and achieved in just under six hours!
It is always a joy when you know you have students who are paying attention, but more importantly, are comprehending and then utilising what they are being taught - and both students demonstrated an enormous grasp of the techniques given to them.
I'm a big believer in continuing to learn, from as many sources as possible, about your chosen profession - and a big part of achieving this is having an enthusiasm for what you do. Georgie and Emma have that in abundance and were a joy to teach - and I thank them both for all their hard work.
I have to say to both Emma and Georgie - well done on keeping up and staying the distance - you should both be very proud of what you acheived in the workshop and I look forward to seeing you continue to develop as actors. Remember to keep observing, noting objectives, listen and above all ... PLAY!
On a side note - as I had just received a note from one of the crew currently working on "Boytown" (the new Mick Molloy feature film, shooting in Melbourne), asking if I could recommend anyone interested in undertaking some extra work this coming week on the film, I very happily passed on the information to Georgie and Emma, and look forward to hearing back from them about their first experience of working on a professional movie set. I hope they have a great time and am glad I could give them the chance to gain some film experience, which will only help them grow as actors as they continue to build their careers.
Weekly classes - expressions of interest requested
A couple of you have asked if I intend to run weekly classes, much like the ones I ran through Mt Martha Community Contact over 2003-2004. I wouldn't be adverse to doing this again, but only if class numbers justify the expense of hiring the venue and taking out the public liability cover. If you are interested in undertaking weekly classes (which will run for 8 weeks over the school term - starting in January 2006), then please email actingup (at) salmac.com with "Weekly Classes" in the subject line and your name, contact details and preferred weeknight for taking the class in the body of the email.
Weekly classes would cover in detail the Stanislavski system, incorporating elements of Adler and Meisner, as well as a touch of Strasberg. Students would work on scenework and monologues, as well as improvisation, voice and camera technique. I would need between 8 to 10 students per class, per term to cover all related costs. Classes would run on a weeknight at Mt Martha House, between the hours of 7pm-10pm.
So, if you're interested in taking a weekly class - let me know!
