Sir Nigel Hawthorne left a large and distinguished body of work in film, television and theatre. His unique and understated style showed us great depth and sensitivity, and gave us memorable performances in all his many, varied roles. Equally at home as a mad King of England as he was as a lonely and lost English artistocrat, gentle and compassionate Santa Claus or driven, workaholic Heart Surgeon, Nigel was one of those rare actors - versatile, honest and real. He was an actor's actor.
